Patients Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using such drugs should be informed of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Use

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
